From Member Lee Harp: Urban Promise on 20/20

A community progam near and dear to Lee will be featured on 20/20 this Friday on ABC.
"It deals with how young kids in Camden, New Jersey cope with growing up surrounded by poverty, drug dealers, crime, violence and despair while trying to grow up.  The kids receive help from a faith-based nonprofit called Urban Promise Ministries, with which I've been involved for several years.

Over the last 18 years or so, Urban Promise has become what I call "The Miracle on 36th Street", providing free summer camps and free after-school care at 6 different locations throughout the city of Camden, and also establishing an elementary school, a small alternative high school, and a unique training program for teenagers, teaching them how to be mentors and counselors for those non-school programs, and paying them to do so.

The overall object of all the programs is to prepare children from Camden for productive lives, and to believe in themselves. Urban Promise has an amazing success rate, graduating 99 % of its high school students, with 90% of those going on to college."
