Soprano notes for retreat
Good afternoon, Sopranos!
Here's what we covered at the retreat on Saturday:
Rachmaninoff Movement 5:
- when breath marks are in the text, this will usually connote lifts rather than breaks; the idea is to create a cadence in the music that is similar to how it would be spoken
- m13, add a breath after "Tvoyego"
- m22, end w/ breath
- m27, SIs lift before m28
- m31-32, no breath
- m23, begin slight cresc to m25
- p31, the top of the page was too loud, keep at pp
- m22, ff
- m27, SIs will hold the whole note, SIIs cut off on the first beat
- m22, SIIs sing C natural, not C flat
- m32-33, connect "z" to "ra"
Movement 7:
- beginning, start with all SIIs (not just SIIs for the 3-part divisi)
- m11-12, lifts after each "va"
- m14, Fred will be in slow 4 until the end
- m18, cresc into mf at m19
- m4, don't hold the "ni" too long
- m15, pp to p to pp
- m20, Fred will cue the baritones' move
Movement 8:
- m18, ritard
- m21, Tempo I, a little faster than previous measures
- lifts after each Alliluiya
- m40, cut off the tied eighth
Movement 9:
- m71-73, cresc
- m72, don't smack the "Bog"
- m72-73, no break
Requiem:
Movement V
- m41-42, no break
- m43-44, no break
- m22-23, no break
Movement VI
- m46, emphasize the F natural a bit
Psalm 148:
- m11 and m17, lift after "Praise Him"
For next Tuesday: we will start at the beginning of Rachmaninoff and go as far as we can. This is our LAST rehearsal alone before we sing with ACS. Also, if you're thinking of auditioning for any of the semi-choruses, be prepared by 2/6, in case Phillip wants to audition then.
See you Tuesday!
