Eastern Market Fire--a few words from CHC President Marian Connolly

For those of us who live on the Hill, Eastern Market is our community center.  The devastating fire in the early morning hours Monday, the 30th, leaves us with a huge hole in the fabric of our communal life.  The Chorale's history is intertwined with the Market.  Through the years, we have passed out flyers on Saturdays to advertise our upcoming concerts.  For many years, we held our yard sales in the shadow of the Market on what is now the Port City Java outside seating area.  The location was ideal for our principle fundraiser because we could draw on Market customers.

The Capitol Hill Community Foundation has established a fund to accept donations to assist the employees and merchants who are displaced by the fire.  The Marc Fisher WE.Post article provides a link to the Foundation's site for those who wish to donate directly.  I'm also attaching a link to the NPR commentary by Bonny Wolf, coincidentally the co-founder of t he Capitol Hill Chorale and my neighbor.

Jonathan Darr, Executive Director of our parent organization the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, has contacted the Foundation and pledged whatever help CHAW can provide, including using the Workshop for meeting spaces.  I have told Jonathan that the Chorale salutes his quick response and will want to be responsive as well.  Christ Church, which hosted our successful spaghetti dinner, is thinking of hosting a spaghetti dinner featuring John Philip Sousa's mother's "famous" spaghetti recipe. They have asked us for some initial planning and organizing advice based on our years of conducting this event.  As we learn more, the Governing Committee will consider what we can do as a Hill-based arts organization to contribute to the community effort to help our Market friends who.  If you have thoughts about how the Chorale might lend support, please send them to me or other GC members.  marian.connolly@verizon.net.
