CHORALE SUPPORT OF EASTERN MARKET FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

Last week, we invited comments on how and to what extent the Chorale could contribute to the community efforts to preserve our Market following the devastating fire Monday the 30th.  We  thank those who responded with statements of general support for our doing something as well as those who made suggestions about how we might contribute.

The Governing Committee held a special meeting before Tuesday's rehearsal to make a decision on the timing and level of involvement.  The Governing Committee was unanimous in the desire to contribute in some way and also felt that a quick response at some level was desirable.  The Committee considered a variety of options, including taking up free will offerings at both concerts, devoting different percentages of June concert ticket sales, and designating proceeds from a special summer concert or sing-along.   The Committee's final decision combined several of the options.  The decision was as follows:
  •  The Chorale will devote 50% of our ticket sale proceeds from the June 2 and 3 concerts to the Capitol Hill Community Foundation to benefit efforts to support the market merchants and employees.
  •   In addition to the 50% donation, we will give our audiences the opportunity to make a free will offering at the concerts and have invited the Community Foundation to provide a representative to address the audience before the intermission to provide a status report and to make an appeal for continued donations.
  •   If we are able to organize a summer sing-along concert, we will devote 100% of the proceeds to the Community Foundation Market Fund.
  •   The Community Foundation and other community leaders have expressed concern about sustaining community interest and support after the initial outpouring of support.  In light of this concern,  the Governing Committee will consider how it can assist in keeping Market funding needs in the forefront of the community's awareness and whether we can provide additional support.

Marian has notified the Community Foundation of our decision, and they are deeply grateful for our support, especially in light of the fact that we are a relatively young nonprofit arts organization.  They have accepted our invitation to address the audience.  They will be making note of our donation on the Foundation's web site and will provide a link to our website where people can get information about our concerts.

Also, at the Foundation's invitation, we will be joining the Foundation and the Save our Market tee-shirt salespersons at the Port City Java site this Saturday and, possibly, next Saturday to sell tickets.

Volunteers Need to Pass Out Flyers Saturday/Sunday at Eastern Market.
Marian Connolly is looking for someone who can organize volunteers to pass out flyers this weekend at the Market.  If we could get 3-4 people to hand out flyers on 7th Street, including at the flea market entrance, maybe for an hour in the late morning and another hour in early afternoon, that would be terrific.
