Running for the Governing Committee

Editors note: Elections have been concluded. Erin Williams is our new At Large Member.

Reminder: We will be holding an election to fill an at-large seat on the Governing Committee for one year. Please give your nominations to a member of the Nominating Committee (Holly Degn, Jess Chaiken, John Wodatch, or Bob Mantel).

Erin Williams has added her name to the nominations with this statement (since she'll miss the next rehearsal):

Having sung with the Chorale for the past 2 seasons and participated in fund raisers like Oktoberfest and the Spaghetti dinner, I believe the group offers musical and community opportunities for not only the singers, but the Capitol Hill and DC community.  I have served on the board of other non profit organizations and would look to leverage those experiences and lessons learned with the Chorale.

Thanks for the vote of confidence in asking me to run and I look forward to the year ahead.

I understand that the election for the empty seat on the Governing Committee was held last week - I was out of town on an urgent family matter and I am sorry I did not get to run. Therefore, I wish to deliver a politically posthumous message to the Chorale and the Committee.
I was running in order to help return the Chorale to financial rectitude. I have been in finance in one way or another my entire life. Having a successful for-profit business gives me an insight which few, if any, in the Chorale possess. After exposure to non-profit operations, I would like to use the metaphor of the shepherd and his flock of sheep when it comes to financial matters. In the small, for-profit world, you never turn your back on the wolves; in the small, non-profit world, you never turn your back on the sheep.
Financial and volunteer supporters of a non-profit entity are like one horse in a two-horse buggy - each counts on the other to pull equally. When five of the nine members of the Governing Committee voted last year to give away one-third of the Chorale's annual earned income to another non-profit organization for an emotional and a personal cause, it sold out those that work for and donate to the Chorale's finances. I related our Chorale's action in this matter to the Administrative Director of my daughter's chorus. Her answer was terse and absolutely on point, to whit "We would never betray our supporters this way." She and I discussed how difficult it is to raise money and to secure repeat contributors to arts-oriented non-profit organizations.
Just so the Chorale will know what went on behind the scenes, I recommended a face-and-income saving measure prior to our concert which was disregarded by the Committee. That measure would have kept me as a contributor. I also provided two additional steps which I would take should they do as they did. Let me be frank - I do not trust the Governing Committee unless it issues a Mission Statement(for which I have been adamant)which will preclude future follies of the type made last June. And Erin, Andy, and Brother McGahey, I trust you will take this to heart and bring the Committee to do the right thing.
Having been a major contributor to the Chorale for years, I felt violated, trust-wise and for the goals which I hoped to help the Chorale obtain in the near future. I hoped that with my support, we could possibly travel, have more orchestra, bigger works, better pay, and so on. Also, with the specter of possibly selling my business, I hoped to make a large single contribution to effect that future capacity of the Chorale instantly. Admittedly, those were my dreams, perhaps not shared by others or beyond their expectations, but those dreams have been dashed by June's folly.
I congratulate you Erin - you know I have always thought you were the tops - and I am calling on you and other new members of the Committee to make sure that the sheep are under adequate supervision. Thanks...

Well congratulations to Erin Williams. I was going to run myself but, I missed the election. The Oktoberfest is a great event, it's always a good time. There are a good bunch of singers there and always great bands. I am going to try to make it there annually if I can. I look forward to it every year.
